While it can be argued that any of ITV’s earliest programmes could equally well have been produced by the BBC and not looked a great deal different, the same was not true of the new network’s news provision.

Faced with an Act that required “due accuracy and impartiality”, the fledgling ITA was given little additional guidance.

The resulting organisation, Independent Television News, took a quite different approach to that of its rivals on the ‘other side’. Moving into Television House after starting at Ingersoll House across the street, ITN broke new ground in British broadcasting. But its early years were not without their challenges…
