19691001 Granada

Granada time tunnelFrom the TVTimes for Wednesday 1 October 1969 comes this run down of what you could be watching on Granada. Things worth noting:

  • The TVTimes was going through a habit of listing the programmes in brief in one column and picking out some, but not all, to give details for in the main text. Its odd
  • There was nowhere in the Granada region you could get the Harlech General Service; but the TVTimes always showed Harlech Wales as a variant on the General (outside of Wales) so lazily just copied-and-pasted the regional entry across
  • The strange allergy to using “ATV” as a name that many papers had appears here too: the region is named as “Midland”
  • An hour and a half of Labour Party conference at 9.30am. Border moves this to 2.55pm and cuts it to 40 minutes. Harlech General Service cuts it to an hour from 10am, while Harlech Wales gives it an hour and 15 minutes from 9.45am. ATV appears to give it two bites of the cherry
  • Of all the programmes TVTimes could pull out from the daytime list, it goes with The Beverly Hillbillies. Go figure
  • Freed from being reserved to weekends in the North by ABC, The Avengers makes its way on to weekdays and Granada at last with a repeat of 1965’s “Castle De’ath”
  • Association Football, in case you were planning to mistake it for Rugby Football
  • What the Papers Say is here shortened to The Papers. That didn’t last

A sports obsessed reply coming up.

The football match critique starts with a complaint that teams’ shirt numbers don’t represent the players’ positions any more – and this at a time when substitutes (one per team, mind) had only been introduced four years earlier. What would the critic make of today’s squad numbers?

Sticking with football, any idea why the episode of “Coronation Street” was billed as “Not exactly the World Cup Final”?

Finally, nice to see a healthy slice of wrestling just before you go to bed but, as it’s a midweek showing, we wouldn’t get Kent’s usual Saturday closing gambit “Have a good week till next week”.

Listed at 4.25 pm is a series called The Short Story, which is, in fact an umbrella title to 1950s repeats of Douglas Fairbanks Presents, Mark Saber & Sailor of Fortune.

The Yorkshire TV Times listed Granada’s variations; but why not vice versa? How bizarre can you get?!
