Joycelyn Chinery MBE, better known as Joy Beverley, has died at the age of 91. She was the eldest of the Beverley Sisters.

The sisters’ first performance was in 1944 on the BBC’s Allied Expeditionary Forces Programme radio station, which combined the programmes of the BBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation forces programmes and the American Forces Network into one station for all Allied troops between D-Day and VE-Day.

Joy was part of one of Britain’s first ‘celebrity marriages’ when she wed the England and Wolverhampton Wanderers footballer Billy Wright. The marriage lasted until his death in 1994.

Uniquely, the sisters had a joint Desert Island Discs in 1961, where they chose one of their own records amongst Charlie Drake, Ron Moody and Sibelius. Their record to be rescued from the waves was Land of Hope and Glory; Joy chose The Book of Soccer by her husband as her book, and a Rolls-Royce as a luxury.

An early cinema commercial that featured The Beverley Sisters, was for Bulmers Woodpecker Cider, it had a brief revival on ITV in the 90s (I think).
