And so it begins. London News Network is to be the first casualty of the Carlton/Granada combination, with the role of producing London’s news programme being taken over by ITN according to a report in the Media Guardian.

Although the London service will retain it’s own identity, and it’s own editorial team, it will come from the ITN offices, and staff on both sides are set to loose their jobs.

The obvious question is… why stop here? Why not move all the regional news teams under ITN? Given that regional production bases are now little more than a mottley collection of news and production departments controlled from varying parts of the UK, it’s not as if much would really change…
